NOTE:

·      Question 1 is compulsory and carries 28 marks. Answer any FOUR questions from the rest.  Marks are indicated against each question.

·      Parts of a question should be answered at the same place.

·      All calculations should be up to three places of decimals.

Q.1      a.  Discuss the various methods of controlling animation.

             b.  Discuss hypertext and hypermedia.  For what purpose are they used?

             c.  An uncompressed audio signal of telephone quality is sampled at 8 kHz and quantized with 8 bits per sample.  Find the bandwidth and storage requirements needed to store one second of playback?

             d.  Describe the four types of image coding used in MPEG for processing.

             e.  Discuss briefly the various aspects of multimedia operating systems.

             f.   Discuss the following:

                  (i)  quality of service

                  (ii) video-conferencing and their standards

             g.  What are the basic characteristics of multimedia database management systems?  Discuss them.               (74)

Q.2       a.  Discuss data streams characteristics for Continuous Media.                                                (9)

             b.  A node X in a network transmits packets to another node Y assuming Poisson process with parameter l = 2. If transmission is carried out for 30 minutes, find out the time interval to make it strongly periodic.           (9)

Q.3     a.  Discuss various aspects of music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) standard including devices.      (9)

             b.  Compute storage requirement for a speech lasting for one hour. What is the data rate of the channel to transmit / broadcast online?                                                                                                              (9)

Q.4     a.  Discuss various characteristics of video signal representation, i.e., visual representation, transmission and digitization in detail.                                                                                                       (9)

             b.  How many CDs of 690 MB size would be needed for a video (RGB) of 2 hours duration and no compression technique has been used and no sound is there in it. It is assumed that display unit is super VGA and motion frequency is 25 Hz.                                                                                                       (9)

Q.5     a.  What are the basic compression techniques? Discuss each one of them.                         (9)

             b.  For a video (RGB) of one hour which is encoded in MPEG-1 standard, what would be the storage requirement? For what resolution of the display device is it suitable? Assume aspect ratio of device is 4/3 and motion frequency is 20 Hz.                                                                                            (9)
