Forum
The
Institution is promoting in national interest, an Apex Forum
which provides platform for exchange of meaningful ideas amongst
policy makers, industry leaders, academicians and professionals.
The forum has been very active during the year under review.
Following conferences were held under its aegis:-
- Exploitation
of Ku-band
–The first Apex Forum was organized on March 12,
2004 at IETE HQ. 12.4 to 18 GHz band of microwave frequencies
is designated as Ku-band as per International Convention.
The opening up of Ku-band has facilitated growth of satellite
based communication & broadcasting services, VSAT
Industry, Distance Education Programme, DTH Broadcasting,
and Data services. Opening up of the Ku-band in the country
has enhanced creative atmosphere. All speakers concentrated
not only on the necessity of Ku-band for rural development
of the country but also on feasibility and special provision
which are great help in reaching the technology to the
rural areas.

Optimal Utilization of National
Frequency Spectrum -The second Apex Forum
of the year was held on April 24, 2004 at IETE HQ on the
ever-important topic of “Optimal Utilization of
National Frequency Spectrum”. Requirement, inadequacy
of allocation, optimal utilization, standardization and
high cost of the RF Spectrum were the main issues around
which deliberations centered. Various suggestions made
included -The wireless links below 3GHz band should either
change over to optical fiber copper cable or shift to
frequencies above 10GHz in Ku or Ka band; The price of
the spectrum should be made affordable; Organizations
using old inefficient transmission equipment should make
efforts to replace them at the earliest in a time bound
schedule.

“Broadband- The Answer
to ICT Development”
was the topic of the third IETE Apex Forum on July 10,
2004. Broadband is being seen as a media of the future.
There are unlimited avenues in which broad band services
are going to open up different ICT applications such as
in the area of entertainment, marketing, freight logistics,
transportation, healthcare, tele medicine, financial services,
cheque transaction, tourism, e-governance, etc. ICTs are
the necessary tool for desired economic growth of people
living in every part of our country.
